Musical Spotlight #4: Foo Fighters - Back and Forth

This is a pretty in depth doco about the beginning of one of the greatest bands of the 90's through now. It chronicles the ramifications of the death of Kurt Cobain and how that affected the remaining members of Nirvana, which culminated with the formation of the Foo Fighters. By the way, Dave Grohl is fucking awesome.

Most Fans of the Fooies know that Dave recorded the first album by himself, playing every instrument and singing every word, save for a solo on one of the songs. The tape of these sessions circulated and gained recognition within the music industry which made Dave think he needed to get more people in the band. For obvious reasons.

The original line up.

This is where he recruited Pat Smear, Nate Mendel and William Goldsmith. Remember him? Nah, I didn't really either, until I went back and watched some early videos. Which is a lie, I just like Taylor better. So they toured the fucking house down and shit and when it came time to record the second album, The Color and the Shape, a bunch of shit went down which ended with half the band changing and nearly imploding. Watching this movie it's established that this has happened a fair bit over the years but the band seems to have found it's permanent line up. I fucking hope so because Wasting Light is the tits as I have mentioned before.

You should also watch the Wembley concert where they played in front of about a billion people.

We see insights into Taylor's heroin overdose, Pat getting the shits and leaving, Chris wondering what the fuck is going on, Nate quitting for 5 minutes and Dave playing with other bands and what the rest of the band thought of that at the time.

Also, for the first time in 16 years, Krist Novoselic records with the band and appears on Wasting Light playing bass on one track and the accordion on another. Pat points out what we all have thought at one point or another, Why didn't that happen earlier? Not immediately after Nirvana decided not to go on without Kurt, but maybe on the 2nd or 3rd record or something.

Pat's fuck-yeah-awesome mo.

As far as band doco's go, this one doesn't go into as much depth as Metallica's Some Kind of Monster but it goes somewhere near the mark, but we also get a bit of a sense of humour with it, and that's how I love my Foo Fighters.
