Retro Review #17: True Blood Season 2

Picking up, pretty much exactly where we left of in Season 1, True Blood's second season was pretty much more of the same kind of awesomeness, with a bit more shit thrown in. Maryann, introduced at the end of last season is the main antagonist this year, and she has a connection to one Mr. Sam Merlotte's past. Sam hates the bitch but no-one knows why and he ain't tellin'.

Sookie and Bill shag straight away after he comes out of the ground. It's not the sexiest scene, he's covered in dirt. He could give her an infection. Eric and Pam are more central to the action this year and have kidnapped Layfeyette and chained him up in the basement of Fangtasia as punishment for selling V.

Not aliens.

Tara is just as fucked up as usual, buying into Maryann's bullshit until the very end, and Jessica and Hoyt have it off, only to find that Jessica virginity grows back. A minor annoyance. Nobody listens to Andy until Jason, Lorena shows up for a bit, cunty as ever, Arlene and Terry stuff around, Jason joins an Anti vampire church and predictably, things don't end well, we meet Sophie Anne-Leclerq, a vampire Queen, Godric, Eric's maker is introduced and it all ends with a cliffhanger with Bill about to ask Sookie to marry him. There's also more vampires playing the Wii.

Maryann. What a bitch.

On a whole, season 2 is bloodier, sexier and just better than season 1, keeping with the same structure of having a cliffhanger at the end of every episode. This is especially annoying when watching for the first time on DVD, as you can't stop watching and you endure a sleepless night or two.

If I haven't mentioned, it is based on the Southern Vampire Mysteries, with each season focusing on a book in the series. They take the inspiration from the book with the corresponding number in the series, meaning season 2 is based on the second book. It doesn't follow the books exactly as different characters have met different fates and generally been introduced at different times or left out of the show completely.

The season 3 review will be coming up in the next few days or so, so I can preview Season 4, which is premiering later in the month.

Jessica has also become a popular character, amusingly annoying Bill with her young vampire ways.
