Retro Review #15 True Blood Season 1

Watching the first season again, you notice a couple of things you might not have the first time around. Not a whole hell of a lot but there are bits and pieces. You should go back and watch it to see if you notice the same things or even different things. But here we go, True Blood Season 1:

We start off with a couple driving along and then stopping at a shop somewhere. There's something on telly about vampires and the new Tru Blood, a synthethic blood for vampires. The shopkeeper pretends to be a vampire and scares the kids, then the huge hillbilly type behind them turns out to be one.

That's Bill and Sookie.

The basic premise for the season is that Sookie Stackhouse can hear people's thoughts, Jason fucks everything that moves, some of them turn up dead and the fuzz finger Jason for it, Layfeyette is a chef, works on the road crew, a gay prostitute and a drug dealer, Bill is a vampire and falls for Sookie, Eric's not around much at the start, Sam owns the bar, Tara's mum is a cunt and there's storylines for about 20 other different characters. At one point or another, most of them get their bits out.

When he is around, he has a different look about him.

For a show that ends on a cliffhanger every week and has so many characters to pay attention to, it's pretty easy to follow, unlike 24 or Lost where if you miss a week, you have no idea what the fuck's going on.

My fellow Aussie Ryan Kwanten really shines on this show as Jason Stackhouse but it's the performance of Anna Paquin that everybody tunes in for. Or maybe also that blonde dude up there. Or maybe it's everyone on the show, I don't know, I haven't asked everybody who watches.

It's obvious: Sex and Violence
