Retro Review #24: Community Season 1

It took me forever to discover the joys of this show. It was only after I heard that the Cougar Town writers decided to put Danny Pudi into the background and the Community writers put Busy Phillips and Dan Byrd as extras. Now that I watch Community, I probably enjoy it more than Cougar Town, although Cougar Town is still fuck off funny.

I bought this on DVD yesterday and have watched it all the way through. I've seen it before and if you have, like me, you would have looked forward to Modern Warfare the most. I resisted not just watching that ep first and starting again.

Paintball at school. F yes.

That's the 23rd episode and it worth waiting for so just hang on for a while whilst you watch the 22 before it. They're all good too. A lot of episodes seem to be spoofs of something like Goodfellas or zombie apocalypses.

Created by Dan Harmon who essentially did the same thing before writing it, the mix of characters is just about perfect. Starring Joel McHale as Jeff Winger, Gillian Jacobs as Britta Perry, Danny Pudi as Abed Nadir, Yvette Nicole Brown as Shirley Bennett, Donald Glover as Troy Barnes, Alison Brie as Annie Edison,  Ken Jeong joins after the pilot as Ben Chang and Chevy Chase as Pierce Hawthorne. I've never liked that guy but I tolerate him here, he does have a pretty cool name though.

Among the many guest stars that appear this season are Eric Christian Olsen, John Michael Higgins, Jack Black, Tony Hale, Anthony Michael Hall, Lee Majors, Patton Oswalt and Owen Wilson. Jack Black is particularly memorable even though he basically plays the same character in every-fucking-thing.

He was only in one. Thank fuck.

Community has the same elements as most comedies, great chemistry between the cast, especially with Troy and Abed, Jeff and Britta have the kind of romantic thread that plays out over the course of the season but it doesn't overpower any of the other stories, it's kinda nice. Pierce has a hard-on for Shirley and Annie and Troy went to the same high school but he never noticed her. She likes him a lot but used to have a drug problem. Pierce is also quite rich.

The reason Jeff is back at Community College is his BA was fake and he was disbarred until he got a real one. He started the study group to try and bang Britta because he's pretty much just a prick. Over the course of the season Jeff seems to need these people around and likes the fact that they seem to need him as well. It's a nice arc that continues to play out after season 1 and will until the show ends I suppose. Some of the highlights are the tag scenes at the end, they gave us Troy and Abed in the Morning, some crumping and quite a memorable little Spanish rap song. I'll leave you with this...

Let that sink in.
