Retro Review #19: True Blood Season Three

More violence, nudity and general holy-fuckery than before, Season 3 of the acclaimed HBO series, True Blood brought more supernatural creatures into the mix including werewolves, were-panthers and brujo's, which is a witch. A lot of different shit went down as Bill and Sookie tried to find their way back to one another after Bill was taken at the end of Season 2.

I quite liked season 3, I liked the others too, I can't say for sure that it gets better as it goes along but it definitely keeps the same standard going. Jason's still dense, Lafayette's still flamboyantly gay, Tara's still annoying, Andy's still a wanker, Bill's still brooding, Eric's still a prick, Sam's still a sourpuss, Terry's still a goose and Sookie's still hot.

See.

Bringing in the werewolves was probably a bit predictable in this age of vampires and werewolves being fucking everywhere, but it worked and along with a nice bit of back story, brought a bit of freshness to the series, not that it was stale, but it doesn't hurt to mix it up a bit.

We also met the cunt of all cunts, Russell Edgington, an ancient gay vampire who doesn't adhere to the rules of the vampire chain of command. In one of the most shocking things in recent television history, he goes on live TV and pretty much fucks any chance of people accepting vamp's at any time in the near future.

I hate that guy.

One thread that has been going from the start is what exactly is Sookie? We find out bits and pieces towards the end of the season but I reckon we'll learn more in Season 4. We also learn that Bill has been less than honest and that Eric truly cares for Sookie. Sam also has a pretty intriguing arc having found his family and flashbacks to before he was in Bon Temps. Lafayette hooks up with a nurse at his mothers hospital and that's all lovely and gay, it's one of the most interesting stories this season actually, and Tara's vampire Franklyn is a psychotic motherfucker who has broken down Tara to a shell by the end, it's no surprise she does what she does.

She's a fae. Look it up.

All in all, I want to see Season 4. It's been killing me that True Blood's been on hiatus but that happens. I suppose I just miss it because all my other shows on network TV are on hiatus now. You might have noticed I'm quite fond of Hawaii Five-0.
