Mr. Sunshine Pilot Review

Matthew Perry is back on TV again after the failure of the brilliant Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. And he comes back in the equally brilliant, if not better, Mr. Sunshine, co-created by Perry himself.

He plays Ben Donovan. The guy who runs everything at the Sunshine centre, which is a 17000 capacity arena. His boss is Crystal Cohen (Alison Janney), who seems to always be high. She is the owner and makes Ben's job difficult because as well as being high, is a fuckin' nutcase who seems to barely know what's going on around her. I only know Janney as a dramatic actress from The West Wing (never seen it) but she has the comic timing in this show to make this a great role for her.

Andrea Anders sleeps with her second Friend after Joey (which I thought was alright so fuck you). She plays Alice who at the beginning has a fuck-buddy relationship with Ben but ends it after Alonzo (Mike Cannon from Las Vegas, otherwise known as the actor, James Lesure), asks her to move in with him and she accepts, forcing Ben to realise the fact that he is a selfish prick who only thinks of himself (like myself I'm told by my father, brother, cousins, women, friends, a plant and a porcupine).

Pictured: Selfish prick

It's also good to see James Lesure back on telly after why-the-flying-fuck-did-they-cancel Las Vegas. Which was awesome. What happened with Danny and Delinda anyway? Alonzo is a former NBA player who is seemingly and annoyingly the most positive person on the planet. The contrast to Perry's Mr. Sunshine which in case you didn't know, is sarcastically named.

Mr. Sunshine, Yay

Rounding out the regular cast is Nate Torrence who was also seen in a less prominent role in Studio 60, as Roman Cohen, Crystal's son. They are not close and seems to inheret his mother's lack of common sense as demonstrated in the seemed-slightly-out-of-place scene in which he asks Ben about Rainbow Connection. Also, according to Ben's unhinged assistant, he is gorgeous (She lit a guy on fire = unhinged).

Ben's assistant Heather, Portia Doubleday, (I could look up what she's been in before but I don't want to) has a smile that in real life would be a breath of fresh air, but here, she subtly throws in some psycho eyes and you know that she would probably kill you if you did her wrong. She seems to be a good assistant though, letting everybody know it's Ben's birthday by putting a Happy Birthday whatsy on the scoreboard for all to see.

Gorgeous indeed.

Guess what? Jorge Garcia is in it too, albeit in a guest starring role, he should be in it more as he had a couple of great scenes with Perry and I think I read he will be back in a few weeks anyway, write that down, and if his scenes are as good as this episode, it will be another win for Mr. Sunshine.

So I think I'm done for the moment, wait, I also watch Episodes with Matt LeBlanc and Cougar Town with Courteney Cox and of the three, I think this is the best although playing a fictionalised version of himself, Matt LeBlanc calls his ex-wife the cunt-word and then gets to see his kids. Aww.

To round this out, loved it. Thumbs up and stuff. But some generic Jonas Brother turns up next week which won't stop me watching, but also wouldn't get me to watch if I hadn't already seen it. At least it's not Justin Beiber.
