Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow and Paul Bettany are back in the sequel to the 2008, Iron Man. Also joining him are Don Cheadle, replacing Terrance Howard as James Rhodes, Sam Rockwell, Mickey Rourke, Scarlett Johansson and Samuel L. Jackson in an expanded role as Nick Fury. I know it's been out for a while but I've been meaning to do this for a while anyway and with the Marvel Cinematic Universe in full swing, it might as well be now.
Iron Man 2 takes place around the same time as The Incredible Hulk and Thor, as you can tell from easter eggs if your able to spot them. It's about 6 months after the first one, everyone knows he is Iron Man and a senator, played by Garry Shandling, is trying to get Tony to turn his suit over to the government. Believing that it is a weapon that should belong to the US people.
He's inside a doughnut.
Sam Rockwell is well cast as a younger version of Tony Stark/Iron Man's rival, Justin Hammer, who after seeing Ivan Vanko, played by Mickey Rourke, secretly employs him to build weapons based on Tony's technology but uses the time and money to create something different. He becomes a villian that is based on both Whiplash and Crimson Dynamo. Scarlett Johansson plays Natalie Rushman who S.H.I.E.L.D. have placed in Stark Industries to pose as Tony's assistant and gage his performance. And also happens to be Black Widow.
Your Welcome: From Marvel
While not quite the breath of fresh air that was the original, Iron Man 2 succeeds in being bot a crowd pleaser and a great film in its own right. Jon Favreau knows how to direct the fuck out of an action sequence and also the one that pack an emotional punch. That makes me disappointed he's opted not to direct Iron Man 3 and direct something else. I do hope he returns in front of the camera as Happy Logan though. Shane Black has been booked to direct the third installment, having made his debut with the Robert Downey Jr. lead Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and also being responsible for starting the Lethal Weapon series.
Chuck in a few cameo's from Stan Lee, which is pretty much traditional for the Marvel movies and Adam Goldstein, AKA, DJAM, in his last screen appearance before he died. There's a couple more but you can see for yourself.
It's also good to see Don Cheadle kick some ass as War Machine who apparently, is also getting his own spin-off to fuck some shit up in.
Brothers in Arms.
