Musical Spotlight #1: Screaming Bloody Murder by Sum 41

Sum 41's 5th and most recent album, Screaming Bloody Murder is stuck in my head most days. It's stuck in there right now. It's heavy, it's fierce and it goes back to a sound more akin to Chuck the other albums. I like the heavier aspects of Sum 41, a kind of punk-metal style which really appeals to me.

After waiting four years for a true successor to Chuck, Screaming Bloody Murder starts off with Reason to Believe which starts off nice slow then really kicks on with some heavy riffige and hooks you in. It them moves on to the title song which was co-written by new member, Tom Thacker of Gob. Even though he didn't record anything on the album, the main riff on this song came from a song he had written a while ago, and Deryck used for this one.

Deryck kind of looks like a zombie.

It then moves onto a song called Scumfuk which is a good quick heavy punk song and was leaked ages before the album came out. From then on highlights include Jessica Kill, Sick of Everyone, Happiness Machine and the slow and tender Crash. Also, Time For You To Go reminds me of The Dandy Warhols.

Sans Thacker.

Since Dave Brownsound left the band, something has been missing as he was the metal head of the band but I think they have gone back to their strength of the heavier melodic punk that pretty much started with Does This Look Infected? continued with Chuck, was largely ignored for Underclass hero and comes back with a vengeance right here. It must have been Deryck's break up with Avril Lavigne for this is also a much darker effort than previous offerings from the band.

Or maybe he caught something...

Overall this album is All Killer and No Filler (Get it?). Which is good, considering it took a fuck long time to be finished, they started in 2008. The only filler would be the bonus songs which are a live version of Reason to Believe and a song called We're the Same. It's not that bad but there's a reason why songs don't make albums in the first place. It's a nice B-side. Other than that, I'm glad Sum 41 are back after a little break and have turned the knobs up to 11.
